Luc Bourdon tribute

Most people at the rink know that I’m a die hard Vancouver Canucks fan.  Last May, during the Stanley Cup playoffs, the Canucks lost a young player as a result of a motorcycle accident.  Luc Bourdon was full of potential and had a promising career ahead of him.  His life came to a tragic end much too soon.

The Canucks held a memorial ceremony prior to their first regular season game.  It was a very touching tribute, and I decided to post the video here on the blog, which follows below.

New Canucks uniforms released

Here is the new Canucks uniform, just announced and released today:

I didn’t like these at all at first.  After spitting in disgust and throwing up three times, the uniforms are starting to grow on me.  These are very unique, to be certain.  Vintage colours (blue, green), simplified logo (fewer colours), and the most controversial part: the VANCOUVER wordmark.  I initially hated it, but I think it really connects the team to the city and vice versa.

Seeing them hanging on a hanger, or on an individual player I think distorts the true sense of this uniform.  When a whole team is on the ice in a game while wearing these uniforms, I think it’s then we’ll see the true effect. There’s a certain simplicity in these uniforms that make you think “hockey” – old time, simple hockey.  It’s not about fancy logos or sports marketing, or about sports entertainment, but about the heart and spirit of this game.

I’ll probably end up buying one soon.

New Canucks jerseys

I’m a Canucks fan.  Everyone at the rink knows it - mostly because I tell anyone and everyone there every chance I get.

I’ve been a fan of Vancouver’s team probably since 1991.  Growing up in Edmonton and then Vancouver, I used to watch hockey casually as a kid but never really was a fanatic about the game until about 1991 or 1992, when one night I watched on TV the Canucks playing the Penguins.  I was hooked that night, and when the Canucks went to the Stanley Cup finals in 1994 against the New York Rangers, there was no hope left for me.

I’m not ashamed to say I have a Canucks jersey from every era. The Canucks are coming out with a new jersey design on August 29, and until now, the new logo and jersey have been the biggest secret in Vancouver this summer.  The intrigue and hype has reached a feverish pitch up in Vancouver, and for whatever reason I’m feeling it down here in Sacramento.  Reading the news stories out of Vancouver, you would think that the new logo and jersey design was the second coming of Wayne Gretzky.  I can’t wait to see what the new look is going to be!
