An open invitation to Bret Hedican
The NHL free agent frenzy starts on July 1, and guess what? The mighty Puck Hogs will be among the players at the table.
According to my sources:
[Carolina Hurricanes] General manager Jim Rutherford said Thursday that Bret Hedican has told the team he’s moving on, and although there’s a chance he could end up back with the Canes at some point later in the summer as a free agent, he no longer figures in their plans at this point.
The 37-year-old defenseman and his wife, figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi, have said they plan to leave Raleigh and move to Northern California.
That’s right, smooth skating defenseman Bret Hedican is ready to explore his options.
I first took notice of Bret (yes, I’m on a first name basis with him) when he came via a trade to the Vancouver Canucks in 1994, and was a key addition to the Canucks’ run to the Stanley Cup final that year against the NY Rangers. He was but a young pup back then, but even then hockey greats such as Paul Coffey sung Bret’s praises. Hedican was always a very smooth skater, a reliable defenseman, and grew to be a great leader. He won the Stanley Cup in 2006 with the Hurricanes, and now is prepared for something bigger.
Bret, the Hurricanes may not figure in your plans, but you certainly figure in ours. Consider this your welcome mat to the Intergalactic Democratic Republic of PuckHogistan. When you come out this way, get in touch with me and we’ll talk. I’m sure you’d find the Puck Hogs a great fit:
- You are coming to northern California, and we are in northern California.
- You are married to figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi, and our roster has Yama-Ducé.
- You can play with us in the summer, pad your stats, and then re-join the NHL at a higher salary in the fall.
- We BBQ. A lot.
- Adding you to our roster would assure you and us of the coveted Silver B cup.
I am prepared to offer you a compensation package that you will not be able to turn down. Contact me before June 28, and I will assure you a roster spot to play THIS season.
Bret, I am standing by and waiting for your call. Bret?
