Monday Musings: Rough rough!

Our games against the Ice Dawgs this season have been rather evenly matched.  After yesterdays game, we have one win, one loss and now one shootout win against that team.  If we play them again this season, it’ll be in the playoffs, and that will be one h-e-double-hockey-sticks of a game.

The Dawgs get extra pumped when they play us.  They skate hard and play with a lot of aggression.  Last night’s game began to get physical and somewhat rough as well, and I (with unashamed objectivity) believe the Ice Dawgs got away with a lot of physical stuff that normally would be called by the refs.  Of course, the Ice Dawgs would likely say the same about us but we felt some of the whistles against us were for marginal infractions at best.  Despite this, the Dawgs complain quite a bit after every call – which is a lot of protesting considering they are the league’s second most penalized team.

I know this sounds like sour grapes, and it probably won’t be received too well, but remember these are just my observations.  Feel free to disagree.

Regardless, I don’t think that penalties changed the outcome of the game – except for the fact that we scored two shorthanded goals on the same penalty kill.  As Dawgs30 said, the game could have gone either way. In fact, I think the Dawgs had the edge in play and if not for the great play of our goalie Bradt29, and Kula5, we wouldn’t have won.  The Dawgs outshot us by quite a bit (which is rare for us) and outskated us for much of the game.  In the end it was a tough contest and a lot of fun.

Speaking of referees, Captain Phantom is taking a cool survey (because that’s just how she polls) on her site regarding who the most favorite referee in our league is.  I have my pick but it’ll be interesting to see what the results are.  Check it out at http://www.phantomshockey.net

And finally, on another note, ever since the Pirates set up their new website, they’ve won three games in a row (including a trump over the league-leading Volcanoes) making them undefeated in 2008.  Coincidence? Not really.  It’s why we have one.

“Rough Rough” works but I like “If the Referee had another eye, he’d be a cyclops” or even better, “NOW HEAR THIS…New rules: Punching another player in the back of the head when he’s down will only cost you 2 minutes in the box. Welcome to thunderdome, let the games begin…” It’s kinda long but it does have a nice ring to it. Does this new rule apply to all teams or just the house sponsored team??? Oh, well I guess it’s just part of the game… I admire Mike’s composure after the incident the other night, I must admit I don’t think I would have been allowed to stay in the game if I were in his shoes.

When a player decides to play down a level or two in order to seem like a superstar it’s OK, I mean it’s actually pretty cool cause everyone else has to step up their game a little and it can help them develop, but it’s pretty pathetic when someone like that starts being a little bitch cause they’re getting beat. I do have to hand it to the kid, he worked the refs pretty good and I guess I must just be a little jealous, but that type of behavior should not be tolerated in any leauge, especially ours…

I’ve said my piece, I will try to let this one go, but as for now I’m still a little bitter. I hope the next time we meet APL, this will be water under the bridge and the player in question will have wised up a bit… For his sake, I hope the next person he cheap shots doesn’t turn around and teach him a lesson the hard way…

  4. I was hoping Winty would have a good topic on this stuff but looks like he is slacking this week. Possibly a girl in his life?

    Does anyone have Cristy’s #?

  6. I didn’t even know there were guys on APL. I’m glad you guys said something. I’ll look for them next time.
