Monday Musings: Back to the future

How interesting…

Not to keep harping on our early exit during last season’s playoffs, but here’s more harping.  Last season, had we gotten by the Kodiaks in the first round, we would have played the Volcanoes in the second round of the playoffs.  But, of course we were knocked out by the bears.  They went on to play the Volcanoes instead of us, but lost and were eliminated.

This time, having beaten the Kodiaks (who actually were missing some key players) in our rematch, the schedule has us facing the Volcanoes.  It’s too bad it didn’t work out this way in the playoffs but I think next Sunday should be a great game and a test of two strong teams.  Both of our teams are undefeated, and so whoever wins this game gets to sit in first place all by themselves.  This motivation will only add to the rivalry between our teams.  We were the only team that the Volcanoes couldn’t beat last season, and we’re hoping, of course, that the trend continues. It won’t go our way, however, without a huge determined effort by our team.

As for my triumphant return to the ice, it didn’t go as badly as I thought it might.I had only played one game in six weeks coming into this game and was worried about some serious rust.  I was a little shakey on my skates.  I fanned on some passes, missed a couple of others, and fell down for no reason a couple of times.  My game hadn’t changed one bit!

At least we won and any myth that my absence was good luck for the team has now been dispelled.

On a side note, there’s been another reference to the referees giving APL a break on penalties, this time by the Phantoms captain.  The only penalty called during that game was against APL, and the Phantoms won 9-2.  This makes the third team to complain about game officials favouring APL.  Perhaps there’s something to it.
